GORDA, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. California’s public drinking-water database lists a specific system serving the Gorda area on the remote Big Sur South Coast. Its name is GORDA WS, water-system number CA2701310. That name matters because it gives residents, visitors and businesses a starting point to check official water-system records rather than assuming Gorda relies on the same utility as Carmel or Monterey.
What the state record actually shows
The State Water Resources Control Board’s Drinking Water Watch listing identifies GORDA WS as an active noncommunity public water system in Monterey County. Its physical location is listed as 72801 Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920. A system marked active is not a declaration that water is safe or unsafe on a particular day; compliance is evaluated through separate sampling and enforcement records.
The system lists SPRING 01 as an active water source. The state database’s primary-source code is GU, rather than the ordinary groundwater code GW. Readers should consult the state’s definitions or a water-system operator rather than infer water quality simply from a source code. The state record includes a reported transient served population of approximately 50, which is a regulatory inventory figure, not the permanent population of Gorda.
Why a public record is not a violation notice
The database includes separate tabs for monitoring results, sampling schedules, violations and enforcement actions. The mere appearance of a water system on the list is normal: California maintains public records for regulated systems, including small systems that serve businesses, campgrounds and visitors. This newspaper has not established an active water-quality violation from the system-details page, and it would be irresponsible to suggest contamination without a current enforcement document or verified laboratory result.
The state lists the responsible office as Division of Drinking Water, District 30 — Big Sur, reachable at (831) 655-6939 and dwpdist30@waterboards.ca.gov. The database also lists an administrative contact phone number of (831) 620-5082. Those contact details are published by the state, but the responsible supplier for a particular address still needs to be verified.
How to check the latest results
Open the state GORDA WS details, select Monitoring Results or Violations/Enforcement Actions, and read both the sample date and the listed status. California’s Safe to Drink guide also explains how to identify a supplier from a water bill and request a Consumer Confidence Report where one is required.
For residents with private wells or a different small provider, the GORDA WS listing alone does not identify their household’s source. Ask the operator, the appropriate state district or the property owner for the correct system number. The county’s May 2026 regulatory guidance also explains that oversight of some public systems shifted to the state in September 2025.
