GORDA, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Travelers planning to camp along the Big Sur south coast should look beyond the scenic photos and normal facilities description on the federal Plaskett Creek Campground booking page. A current notice on Recreation.gov says flushing toilets are not available, portable toilets are provided, and water is nonpotable. Those advisories directly affect what visitors should bring and should take precedence over the page’s older general description of drinking water and permanent restrooms.

Located across Highway 1 from the Sand Dollar Beach area a few miles north of Gorda, Plaskett Creek is a popular forest campground near Pacific Valley. The Monterey County tourism directory places it approximately 3.5 miles north of Gorda. Its proximity makes these service notices relevant not just to visitors but to residents answering questions about the southern coast.

Three warnings that should not be overlooked

Water: The Recreation.gov alert states “NON-POTABLE WATER”. Do not assume any available taps are safe for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or filling a camper’s fresh-water tank without confirmation of approved potable water. Bring adequate drinking water from a known-safe supply and follow the managing operator’s current instructions.

Toilets: The site says flushing toilets are unavailable and portable facilities have been supplied. Visitors who need particular accessibility accommodations should contact the operator before booking or driving. The ordinary facilities description elsewhere on the page may not reflect the temporary situation.

Wildfire and road-access messages: A version of the campground’s campsite listing also contains a wildfire warning, while directions on the principal federal page still say Highway 1 is temporarily closed from the Monterey side. Those statements must be read alongside newer official road and incident updates. CAL FIRE’s Plaskett Fire incident history reports that previous wildfire-related evacuation orders and warnings were lifted in September and the highway’s fire-related closure was lifted. Separately, Caltrans’ October 29 Highway 1 condition report listed one-way controlled traffic at Mud Creek and other locations, rather than describing the whole Big Sur corridor as shut. This does not establish that every campground, trail or forest road is open today.

What is actually confirmed?

The documents establish that the online listing carries significant visitor alerts and that different official pages do not always present identical or equally up-to-date summaries. California58 did not independently verify which individual Plaskett Creek campsites are occupied, reservable or open for arrival today, and did not receive an on-the-ground facilities report. A campsite appearing in an online inventory is not confirmation of safe access or usable drinking water.

The campground’s published visitor information says there are individual and group sites but no utility hookups, public showers or reliable cell service. Travelers should be prepared for conditions to change quickly on the remote coast. California’s forest emergency orders may restrict land and roads away from Highway 1 even when the highway itself is passable.

Before leaving Gorda or making a reservation

  • Open the official campground page and read its current Notifications and Alerts, not only its historic facilities summary.
  • Contact the campground/operator through the number listed by Recreation.gov, (805) 434-1996, to confirm the water situation, toilets, date-specific opening, and any booking restrictions.
  • Check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before driving, and comply with any Los Padres National Forest emergency restrictions.
  • Do not treat a lifted fire evacuation or an available campsite listing as blanket permission to enter closed forest terrain.

Why we are publishing this: The practical problem is not whether Plaskett Creek is attractive; it is whether visitors see the most consequential safety information before traveling. This guide distinguishes a confirmed website warning from unverified field conditions and does not represent a campground reopening announcement.
