GORDA, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. A popular day trip a few miles north of Gorda is Sand Dollar Beach, a broad stretch of Pacific shoreline reached from Highway 1 near Plaskett Creek Campground. Its attraction is easy to understand: beach walking, coastal views and ocean recreation. But visitors should not mistake an attraction’s appearance on a campground website for a real-time guarantee that every road or trail is currently accessible.

Where Sand Dollar Beach is located

The official Recreation.gov description of Plaskett Creek Campground places the campground on the east side of Highway 1, a short walk from Sand Dollar Beach. Local Monterey tourism materials put the campground approximately 3.5 miles north of Gorda. The campground and the beach are distinct public-use facilities, and their operating conditions may not be identical.

Recreation.gov describes Sand Dollar as one of the largest sandy beaches in the Big Sur area. The agency’s activity list includes shore walking, surfing, exploring and coastal sightseeing. Ocean swell, rip currents, unstable cliffs and cold water demand caution even when the weather inland is pleasant.

Can a family bring a dog?

The federal campground’s public visitor listing identifies Sand Dollar Beach as dog-friendly when dogs are leashed and waste is collected. That does not establish dog access to every nearby protected trail or state-park beach, and posted site rules take precedence. Owners should keep dogs under control around shorebirds and other wildlife.

What about the nearby campground?

Plaskett Creek Campground is managed separately from California State Parks and uses Recreation.gov for reservations. Its online listing includes a facilities description with flush toilets and drinking water but also a current alert stating portable toilets are being provided and water is nonpotable. The current alert is the safer information to use for planning; do not expect drinkable tap water or functioning flush toilets simply because the general facilities paragraph is older.

The listing also carries a wildfire-related warning for the area. Visitors should check the actual operating status of the destination and nearby forest closures with the campground operator or the U.S. Forest Service, rather than presume a bookable website means unrestricted entry. In late 2026, access near Plaskett may also be affected by restrictions arising from the Plaskett Fire.

Check your approach before driving

Use Caltrans QuickMap for current Highway 1 restrictions. The static travel directions on Recreation.gov may retain an older Highway 1 closure warning, so verify actual conditions independently. South Coast visitors should allow extra driving time, bring drinking water, and share their travel plans where cellphone coverage is weak.

This guide does not claim any campground opening, guaranteed parking space or confirmed safe surf conditions on Saturday, October 31. Residents can send agency updates and corrections to california58com@gmail.com for Gorda News.
